In order to defeat the overwhelming

Xie Xuan decided to resort to tricks.
派使者到秦营
He sent an emissary to the
Qin barracks,
提出让秦军稍向后退
suggesting that the Qin army
retreat a bit
以便让晋军渡过淝水
to allow the Jin army to cross
the Feishui River
决战的建议
before starting the battle.
苻坚求胜心切
Fu Jian was eager to win.
他想 我军只要稍稍后退
He believed when his army
retreated a little bit,
等晋军一半过河
about only a half of the Jin
army would have
一半还在渡河时
crossed the river. Then it
would be the best time
冲杀上去
to launch a sudden attack.
我军肯定能大获全胜
He was sure he would definitely win.
于是 秦军接受了谢玄的建议 决定后退
Therefore, the Qin army accepted
Xie Xuan's proposal and retreated.
但苻坚没有料到
But beyond Fu Jian's anticipation,
秦军指挥不统一
the Qin troops, lacked coordination.
一接到后退的命令
Soon after receiving the orders
to retreat,
以为前方打了败仗
the Qin troops in the rear
believed they had
慌忙向后溃逃
suffered a defeat at the front
and fled pell-mell.
谢玄见敌军溃退

Xie Xuan ordered his troops to cross
the river and attack the enemy.
