France prepares for possible emergencies from Iraq war

France has taken measures to prepare for possible emergency situations stemming from the Iraq war which broke out last Thursday, a government spokesman said here Monday.

Under President Jacques Chirac's order, Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin has asked the cabinet to take every precaution for any emergency in order to ensure normal social and economic activities in the country, said the spokesman, Jean-Francois Cope.

These measures included beefing up the security at important state, government installations, warring countries' embassies and missions as well as at Mosques and Jewish synagogues, he added.

Cope said the prime minister also asked the cabinet to make every effort to make the public calm over the US-led war on Iraq and keep restraint during anti-war demonstrations for the sake of domestic stability.

No terror acts have been reported against France so far, Cope stressed, but France keeps a high alert level and the police have intensified around-the-clock patrol about key places, especially at airports and public transport facilities.

France is determined to make joint efforts along with the international community to strengthen the fight against terrorism, he said.
