Angel Maria Villar, president of the Spanish football federation, has resigned from the referees commission of the world governing body FIFA, it was reported on Sunday.
According to Spanish radio, Villar, who is also a FIFA and UEFA vice-president, said he had taken the step because he was dissatisfied with the performances of referees at the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea.
Villar said he planned to meet in the coming days with FIFA president Joseph Blatter to explain his position, according to local reports.
Spain were eliminated in the quarterfinals by hosts South Korea on Saturday in a match in which the Spaniards claimed they were the victims of controversial decisions by the referee.
