FIFA seeking measures to reduce controversial refereeing

Soccer world governing body FIFA said on Friday that it is seeking measures to reduce controversial decisions made by referees on pitches following a string of disputed calls by officials in the 2002 World Cup.

In a FIFA daily briefing, following another round of accusations and counter-accusations concerning the second round match between South Korea and Italy, Edgardo Codesal, a member of FIFA's referees' committee admitted that what could look like a foul or offside on the pitch might not be the case when seen from a video replay or a still photo.

"Just as magicians all over the world make a living by fooling the eyes of the audience, it is not always easy for officials to determine if fouls or offsides have occurred while the game is in progress," said Codesal.

The FIFA official said mistakes will always happen since things move so fast, but added that FIFA's executive and referee committees were looking into moves to reduce the number of errors to minimum, like the selection of referees.

Codesal disclosed that this may include choosing several referees from the same country if they are deemed better qualified to oversee a match. In this year's tournament, the referees were well dispersed, with a country being represented by only one official.
