Mansiz golden goal sends Turkey to World Cup semis

Second half substitute Ilhan Mansiz scored a golden goal in the 94th minute, guiding Turkey to beat Senegal 1-0 and advance into the World Cup semifinals for the first time on Saturday.

Umit Davala broke down the right flank to send a pinpoint pass to the surging Mansiz, who fired the shot over motionless Turkey goalkeeper Rustu Recber into the bottom left corner.

Turkey will take on four-time world champions Brazil in Saitamaon Wednesday.

Senegal and Turkey tied 0-0 after 90 minutes as both teams missed a hatful of clear chances.

Turkey captian Hakan Sukur wasted at least three golden opportunities, including the one at the 27th minute when he failed to control a pass from Hasan Sas with the goal gaping.

Two minutes before the break, Senegal's Omar Daf had to make a desperate clearance off the line from Yildiray Basturk.

Senegal striker El Hadji Diouf had a "goal" ruled out for off-side after 19 minutes and Khalilou Fadiga hit the side-netting four minutes later.

At the 69th minute, Mansiz fired narrowly over the cross bar in his first touch of the ball since he had taken the place of Sukur.

Turkey, making their second World Cup appearance, dashed debutante Senegal's hope to become the first African team to move past the quarter-finals.

Senegal had stunned the world by beating defending champions France in the tournament's opening game.

Draws against Denmark and Uruguay ensured they reached the second round, where they ousted Sweden 2-1 with a golden goal.

After a controversial defeat by Brazil, Turkey beat Costa Rica 5-2 and routed China 4-0 to advance into the round of 16, where they edged out Japan 1-0.

Mansiz said after the match his side had never lost confidence.

"After we qualified we have seen that no one is better than us. We have earned the place in the semi-final. We wanted to win this game and we did. As a team we fought hard.

"We were unlucky to lose 2-1 to Brazil - we now have to concentrate on that match and I think it will be a great match."

Senegal coach Bruno Metsu said he was very proud of his team.

"The players were heroic, now I think we should congratulate the Senegalese team and I am very proud of them.

"We came up against a very good Turkish team -- luck and maybe talent made its choice tonight."

"I think it (Senegal making it to the quarter-finals) gives us a lot of hope for the future, for football in Senegal and in Africa in general."
