The United States beat Mexico 2－nil to become the fifth team to secure a place in the World Cup quarter finals. Brazil beat Belgium 2－nil to advance into the last eight.
The US displayed remarkable teamwork against their neighbors and rivals in their second round clash with Mexico. Brian Mcbride scored his second World Cup goal in the 8th minute to put his side in the driving seat. In the 65th minute, US midfielder Landon Donovan made it 2－nil with a crisp header. And even though the Mexicans dominated the match, the US managed to keep them out through to full time. They had dumped their continental rivals out of the tournament and are rewarded with a quarter final tie with Germany for their efforts.
Belgium launched wave after wave of offensives to counter Brazil's attacking verve. The Belgian tactics did work though － the first half finished goal－less. It wasn't until the 67th minute when Brazil finally found the net － Rivaldo's beautiful control and volley taking a deflection to beat the keeper. Ronaldo made it two and put the tie beyond doubt just twenty minutes later. The Inter Milan man cooly shooting Brazil into a quarter final clash with England.
