Senegal Beat Sweden on Golden Goal

Henri Camara on Sunday scored an equalizer and then the second golden goal in World Cup history, helping first-timers Senegal beat Sweden 2-1 and book a quarter-final berth.

Camara, who put Senegal back to the game with the 37th minute equalizer, struck the winning goal 104 minutes into the match with a low drive into the net off the post.

It was just the second golden goal to decide a World Cup match. In France four years ago, the hosts beat Paraguay 1-0 on Laurent Blanc's 113th minute goal en route to winning the championship.

Senegal are only the second African nation, after Cameroon in 1990, to reach the last eight. Like Cameroon who beat world champions Argentina in the World Cup opener in 1990, Senegal stunned defending champions France at the start of the tournament.

Senegal will face Japan or Turkey in the quarter-finals.

Camara said after the game: "We are not here to be tourists.I'm very happy but we will try to forget this match and focus on the next."

Swedish coach Lars Lagerback said: "I feel sad because we warmed up in the second half and I feel we had the best chances.

"We didn't play that well defensively for a period during the first half but we improved in the second half and we had more chances and that's why it feels hard to lose."

Henrik Larsson, who scored his third goal of the World Cup, gave Sweden the early lead in the 11th minute after heading in a corner kick from left.

Camara made it 1-1, driving a low shot into the bottom corner of the net after shaking off his marker.

Both sides created lots of chances in the final 45 minutes in front of 39,747 at the Big Eye Stadium, but neither side converted any.
