The FIFA World Cup tournament is now in the second round of games. Germany beat Paraguay 1-0 to become the first to enter the quarter finals. England beat Denmark 3-nil, also advancing to the quarter finals.
It was a cautious and rigid match between Germany and Paraguay. Germany put on most of the early pressure in a tight opening 45 minutes, while Paraguay created the best chances for scoring. The second half offered little more by way of attacking football as both sides sat back speculatively. It was only two minutes before the game went into overtime when German Oliver Neuville took a wonder volley to break the deadlock and scored his first World Cup goal. Germany became the first side to reach the quarter-finals, where they will meet the winner of the Mexico-USA clash.
England played quite well in the match against Denmark. Five minutes into the play, England's Rio Ferdinand scored with a header. At the 22nd minute, Michael Owen scored the second goal for England. Then Denmark delivered fierce counterattacks. But heavy rain did not bring them good luck. One minute before the end of the first half, Emile Heskey scored the third goal for England. In the second half, England's defense deterred Denmark and kept the score of 3-0 to the end. England advanced to the quarter-finals, where they will meet the winner of the Brazil-Belgium clash.
