World Cup wrap-up on June 14

In Thursday's World Cup action, Turkey scraped its way out of Group C with a 3-0 win over China, and aided by a 5-2 Brazilian win over Costa Rica. And in Group G, Mexico and Italy booked their second round tickets at the expense of Croatia.

Turkey, who hadn't qualified for the World Cup soccer finals in 48 years, stepped into the second round by beating China. The Turks came in runners up in group C with four points. Brazil finished five points ahead of Turkey at the top of the group following their conclusive 5-2 win over Costa Rica. As with all group end games, both matches were played concurrently. Costa Rica, who also collected four points, crashed out of the tournament on an inferior goal difference. China was also eliminated with three defeats.

In Group G, Mexico' forward Jared Boretii headed a pass home in the 35th minute, sending his side to a 1-0 lead over Itay. But in the 84th minute, Italy's Alessandro Del Piero got his head on a cross and floated the ball into the net, much to Italy's relief. Both teams now go through to the second round at Croatia's expense.

In the match between Ecuador and Croatia. Ecuador took 1 lead over Croatia early in the second half through Edison Mendes, crushing Croatia's dreams of advancing to the second round.
