Wednesday's World Cup developments

CCTV.COM 2002-06-13 09:06:41

In Wednesday afternoon's World Cup developments, England cruised into the second round of the finals with five points.

England created a few scoring chances against Nigeria but missed all of them. The Nigerians penetrated England's defense line several times but also failed to cash in. The match ended in a goal-less tie.

In another Group F match, Argentina were the better team throughout the game but it was Sweden that broke the deadlock first. Argentina slammed home a goal at the 87th minute to bring the game to a ONE-ALL draw, but that was not enough to qualify for the last round of 16.

In the group B matches later in the evening, Spain beat South Africa 3-2, topping the group B with 9 points. And Paraguay flattened Slovenia 3-1, and entered the round of 16 with 4 points. South Africa and Slovenia were eliminated.
