Impressive Brazil beat World Cup debutante China 4-0

Four-time champions Brazil outclassed debutante China 4-0 in a World Cup Group C game in Seogwipo on Saturday.

The attacking trio of Ronaldo, Rivaldo and Ronaldinho each scored a goal and an excellent free kick by left-back Roberto Carlos produced a wonderful night for the Samba soccer.

"I had confidence in the beginning and the team is continuing to improve." said Ronaldo, "Although the coach had some initial worries, I think I can score more goals now."

The result leaves Brazil top of Group C on six points while China remains bottom. Brazil faces Costa Rica in their final group match on June 13 and China plays Turkey purely for pride on the same day.

The Chinese team, playing without key defenders Fan Zhiyi and Sun Jihai, showed initial signs of life in the opening stage. But as the match wore on, they found it hard to go forward.

Carlos put Brazil ahead in the 15th minute when he fired home a blistering free kick past the diving goalie Jiang Jin.

Brazil went close to scoring again soon when captain Cafu cut in from the right flank before blasting a powerful shot blocked by Jiang.

The South Americans doubled their lead after 32 minutes. A Ronaldinho cross from the left found Rivaldo unmarked in front of goal and the FC Barcelona forward netted with ease.

On the stroke of halftime Ronaldinho made it 3-0 with a penalty awarded after Ronaldo was brought down in the box by Li Weifeng.

Ten minutes after the halftime, Ronaldo, a constant menace to the Chinese defence, scored his second goal of the tournament. Cafu held off two Chinese defenders before feeding Ronaldo with a nice cross. The Inter Milan star sealed the rout with a fine finish.

China's best chance came in the 61st minute when midfielder Zhao Junzhe hit the post with a curling shot on the edge of the penalty area.

"It's a pity that we didn't score though we had a few chances." said defender Xu Yunlong.

After Ronaldo struck the winner, the Brazilians appeared to ease off though they have several clear chances to enlarge the margin.
