The World Cup opens with a shock in Seoul as defending champions France are beaten by tiny underdogs Senegal. All World Cup openers are a bit of a lottery but few would have expected the former French colony to beat its former owners - even though it WAS only by a goal to nil.
World Cup AND Euro 2000 champions France are clearly one of FIFA's favorites for this year's trophy. The winner came in the 29th minute, with the ball coming out of a scramble around the goal mouth to fall for Diop Papa Bouba, whose surely now earned hero status. The French were unable to get anything back and narrowly escaped a two-nil defeat in the second half, when Senegal's Khadilou Fadiga hit the post. Hopefully a sign of plenty more excitement to come over the next four weeks.
