Grand spectacle to usher in 2002 World Cup


The countdown to the opening kick-off of the 2002 World Cup has begun. But before all the football action gets underway, fans from around the world will be dazzled by a spectacle involving high tech and tradition. Co-host South Korea is aiming to score points in the hearts and minds of the millions of people who will be watching the opening ceremonies of the soccer tournament on Friday.

The 30-minute grand performance at Seoul World Cup Stadium is entitled "From the East." The show is divided into four sections -- "Welcome,""Communication,""Harmony" and "Share." They will include traditional dance and folk song performances. Festivities will include a 7,000-butterfly show as well as a fireworks display. The South Korean government has invested some 8 million US dollars on the production, which will comprise about 2,300 performers. The extravaganza aims to convey a unifying message of peace and start off the intense competition in style.
