Tibetan girl to see the world  


In 1985, a dozen Tibetan schools were built in 16 interior provinces and cities by non-governmental organizations. Since then, this way of helping Tibetan youngsters has become an established system.

Every July, about 80,000 Tibetan children graduating from elementary schools take the entrance examination, but only 4,000 of them can enjoy the free education in the special Tibetan schools in central China. Thus begins our story.

In the year of 2001, Tibentan schools in Tianjin, Nanchang and Chongqing were recruiting new students in Chamdo area where A Wang Lamu, a Tibetan girl of 14 lives. She takes the entrance examination. Her grandma, father, sisters and brothers are all expecting the announcement of the enrollment. The admission to Tibetan school is a great event of the family. Once A Wang Lamu gets enrolled in a Tibetan school, her future would certainly be bright. And she makes it.

The Tibetan girl yearns for the excitement of the outside world. Following are her answers to our reporter’s questions:

---Do you know how high and how fast planes fly?

---They fly above the clouds, maybe slower than the eagles.


---Do you want to be on it?

---Yes…I like exciting things.


---What kind of exciting things do you want to experience?

---Roller-coaster. I saw it on TV…people’s hair stand up…I want to see the exciting world outside…I like beautiful things
