相声艺人何尚喜到天津投亲不遇，在"三不管"雨夜为人撑伞糊口。上海女伶金玲芳被戏霸程利发纠缠追打，何尚喜出手相救，两人相识。最终，金玲芳还是没逃脱魔掌而进了程家大院。
何尚喜这个聪明的艺人，得到了金玲芳、李惠姝两个女人的爱；更用自己的智慧和临时"现挂"的相声段子化解了地痞、兵痞、同行之间的许多矛盾或险境；他又以同样的智慧对付日本侵略军的压迫和欺凌......
在为国民党"国大代表"演出的舞台上，何尚喜带头拒绝演出，演员们不为大量金钱"包银"所诱惑，金玲芳惨遭各种迫害之后在舞台上自尽，何尚喜在群众掩护下走向新的天地......

This is a story of joys and sorrows about a crosstalk performer in Tianjin City before the Liberation.
