故事发生在中国清朝的同治年间。十九岁的皇上载淳出宫到妓院寻欢，重病而死。慈禧太后想重罚带皇上去妓院的载澄，但因须依靠其父奕欣而宽恕了他。载澄淫逸无度。被送到西郊后，玩女人挥金如土而使银两日空。 他假借“玩赏”之名仿造皇上赐的稀世珍宝变卖换钱。仿制艺人施玉林把仿制的珍宝藏下，又偷刻与原物有别的给载澄。载澄见施玉林的女儿十分俊俏而生歹意，父女急忙逃出虎口。三年后，紫玉堂掌柜方玉海发现施玉林的赝品，请来父女见面。其子方安与莲子一见生情。为祝贺慈禧太后生日，恭亲王想仿制观音像，辗转知道了方玉海认识能工巧将。但方玉海为保护施玉林父女被酷刑致死也未张口。
载澄又找暗娼，因而迷恋上梅仙。她原来是章佳氏，竟是载澄的自家婶子。章佳氏丈夫廉钺大怒成了疯子并到宗人府上告。淳亲王奕宗借机让两宫太后重惩载澄，慈禧再次下令轻处。梅仙得知与载澄的关系后悬窗自尽。载澄得知兆喜抢到姑娘莲子，急去求欢和施暴，莲子被强人刘四救出，载澄因惊恐过度重病不起。恭亲王奕昕对载澄继承王位彻底绝望，把药方上开列的不可缺少的药名全都勾掉......
载澄知道这是“赐死”。他绝望地唱起了心爱的八角鼓......
